Scott,
Oh, my, your story sounds a lot like mine. I went to some readings at the Nebraska Writers Conference yesterday, and definitely felt like a townie. Partly it was my rejection issues kicking in, but the fact is I am not part of the tribe, and both they and I know it. I'm working down the hall from where Ted Kooser used to work, at the same company, but I've honestly been considering getting a television and cable just to have more in common with my co-workers. Thanks for posting your story! And I agree Li-Young Lee is an awesome poet.

Beautiful story! Thanks for sharing it. Liz sent this to me as a must-read. I can't imagine WHAT she was hinting at...I look forward to watching the reading on my next lunch hour. Right now I am reading you.
